On Saturday, the internet was tweeting with pride after Manushi Chhillar won the title of Miss World, making her the first Indian after Priyanka Chopra to win this prestigious title. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s attempt at witticism on Sunday backfired after he tried to play on newly crowned Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar’s surname, comparing it to ‘loose change’. Shashi Tharoor referred to the much-feted coronation of Miss World Manushi Chillar in a barb aimed at the BJP, and its decision to void over four-fifths of India’s currency: demonetisation.

In an attempt to take a dig at the Centre’s ‘demonetisation’ policy, Tharoor thought it would be appropriate to pun around Manushi’s last name. “What a mistake to demonetise our currency! BJP should have realised that Indian cash dominates the globe: look, even our Chhillar has become Miss World!,” Tharoor tweeted.
