Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all ready to land in Gods Own Country to inaugurate the ₹5,181 crore Kochi Metro on 17th June 2017. The metro is stretched across 13-km and it is the 8th metro service to be made operational in India.
The Kochi Metro has many firsts to its credit like offering free Wi-Fi and having the longest 1st phase metro operation in India.
Shortest Commissioning Schedule: Compared to other metro services in India like Mumbai metro which took 75 months, Chennai Metro took around 72 months and Bangalore Metro took 50 months while Kochi Metro took just 45 months, which has been commissioned in a record time.
Go Green: The Kochi Metro is the first metro service in India to leverage the solar power and will have a strong commitment towards clean energy. Also, Kochi Metro pillars will have a vertical garden on every 6th of the 4000 odd pillars. It will also offer free bicycles at every station for passengers to roam around the city.
Equal Opportunity Employer: Kochi Metro has employed a large number of transgender, which makes it the first of its kind and the first state-owned company in India to “officially” appoint transgender.
Women Workforce: Once completed, the Kochi Metro will have a workforce that comprises of 80% women.
Water Ferry: Kochi Metro also plans to offer boat rides as feeder service to the rail corridor which will connect to the 10 islands of Kochi.
Perhaps, Kochi Metro has come to realize the aspirations of the average Keralite who may go outside the state to work in cities like Dubai which has a metro but lacks one in his own home state.
